Secant pile walls are a type of retaining wall that are formed by drilling a series of overlapping concrete piles, each of which is reinforced by a steel beam, to construct a wall.
Secant walls are used prior to excavation to ensure ground retention, with primary piles installed first to achieve sufficient strength before secondary piles are added by partially cutting into each side of the primary piles to ensure a continuous impermeable structure. Each pile usually overlaps by a minimum of 150mm, with the completed closed structure acting as an effective barrier in subsoils that bear water.
