Diaphragm walls are underground concrete structures usually used as permanent foundation walls or retaining walls, but they can also be used as barriers to groundwater. Suitable for most soil types, diaphragm foundation walls can support major construction works, for example the building of deep basements, underground car parks, tunnel approaches, and dams. Only minimal noise and vibration is generated during construction, making these structures particularly suited to populated areas or where there are existing buildings close by.

While serving a similar purpose to retaining walls and secant walls, diaphragm walls are the preferred choice in several situations:

Increased Depth Of Excavation:

In some construction projects, the required depth of excavation makes the removal of large volumes of soil impractical to create stable battered slopes. Diaphragm walls can be installed at a depth of over 55 metres, such as in underground rail projects and tunnels.

Groundwater Barriers:

Diaphragm walls are sometimes more suitable than secant walls for the retention of water-retaining soils, as the lower number of joints in the wall improves water tightness.

High Structural Load:

In very deep excavations, diaphragm walls are used as they can be designed to withstand extremely high structural loads, which is more problematic at greater depths.

Proximity To Existing Structures:

In congested sites close to existing structures, diaphragm walls are often a more appropriate choice, as the low vibration and noise level during installation improves the suitability for groundworks in the locality – for example, expansive cellars and subterranean accommodation in densely populated urban developments.
